Is Dutch still spoken?
Dutch is spoken not only in the Netherlands, but it is also the official language of Flanders, the neighbouring northern provinces of Belgium.
Dutch, with its 24 million speakers one of the 40 most spoken languages in the world, is also an endangered language.
It is spoken, to some degree, by at least 16 million people, mainly in South Africa and Namibia, evolving from the Cape Dutch dialects of Southern Africa. The dialects used in Belgium (including Flemish) and in Suriname, meanwhile, are all guided by the Dutch Language Union.
The Dutch language is a West Germanic language that is the national language of the Netherlands and, with French and German, one of the three official languages of Belgium. Dutch is also called Netherlandic or Dutch Nederlands; in Belgium it is called Flemish or Flemish Vlaams.
Speaker population
In the United States, most Old Order Amish and all "horse and buggy" Old Order Mennonite groups speak Pennsylvania Dutch, except the Old Order Mennonites of Virginia, where German was already mostly replaced at the end of the 19th century.
One of the primary reasons Dutch is relatively easy for English speakers to learn is its shared Germanic roots. Both English and Dutch belong to the West Germanic language family, which means they share similarities in terms of grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure.
YES – With Dutch you learn more about culture
Learning Dutch will put you in touch with Dutch culture. It makes a big difference when you speak Dutch because then you really start to connect with the people. And this contact lets you see you how we do things in Netherlands, like food, parties and traditions.
Both Dutch and German have their challenges, but Dutch is generally considered easier to learn than German. However, your decision should ultimately be based on your goals and interests. Consider factors such as job opportunities, travel plans, and personal interests before choosing which language to learn.
The Dutch people prefer you use “The Netherlands” as Holland is a Western region of the country and consists of two provinces: North Holland and South Holland [it used to be a single Province].
There are three separate dialects of the language, and it's only spoken at the southern fringes of the North Sea in the Netherlands and Germany. However, the closest major language to English, is Dutch.
What's the oldest language in the world?
Historians and linguists generally agree that Sumerian, Akkadian and Egyptian are the oldest languages with a clear written record.
The most similar language to Dutch is Afrikaans. Afrikaans is a daughter language of Dutch and shares many similarities in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.

German is the oldest form. Dutch emerged from it, and from Dutch came English. So Dutch is closer to English.
Conclusion. The Amish, or Pennsylvania Dutch as many outsiders know them, are Germanic people. Most of the earliest Amish arrivals came from the Swiss/Alsace region and brought their traditions and mother tongue with them. Generations of living apart from other communities have kept their heritage intact.
Holland, Michigan - feels like Amsterdam
Stop at the Holland Museum or tour the DeZwaan Windmill while you're there.
Today the majority of the Dutch Americans live in Michigan, California, Montana, Minnesota, Illinois, Wyoming, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, New York, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Idaho, Utah, Iowa, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
J in Dutch is pronounced with an English y sound, as in year. V in Dutch sometimes makes an f sound, depending on the placement and regional dialect. W in Dutch w is a cross between an English w and v sound.
Some people may find Dutch easier to learn due to its simpler grammar, while others may find German easier because of its closer resemblance to English in terms of vocabulary. Ultimately, the difficulty of learning Dutch or German varies from person to person.
The orange color that's present throughout much of Dutch culture is a nod to the royal family, which is made up of members of the House of Orange. The dynasty dates back to 1544 when William of Orange inherited the estate and title at the age of 11.
You can definitely learn to speak great Dutch by yourself. However, if you've never done it before then you'll also be learning how to teach yourself at the same time! Get exposure to the language, listen, read about grammar, ask for feedback and practise as much as you can!

The Foreign Language Institute recommends a total of 24-30 weeks or 600-750 hours of Dutch language learning to reach fluency. Tobian Language School personally recommends 20 – 30 lessons for A2 level with a minimum of 2 weekly lessons. And B2 learners? You'll need to strive for 40 – 50 lessons or up to 50 hours.
Spoken Dutch is not very easy to understand, even for me as someone who speaks both German and Afrikaans (one of Dutch's closest relatives). However, written Dutch is very easy to understand. Even with only German knowledge. English knowledge won't help much there, though.
The Germanic variants led directly to distinct languages, namely Old Dutch, approximately around 500 A.D. Dutch thus dates back roughly 500 years. You can think of it this way to make it more transparent. The first language is German, and Dutch is not older than English.
The Dutch government has officially decided to drop the moniker of Holland going forward, and will only refer to itself as the Netherlands. The Netherlands actually consists of 12 provinces, two of which combined make up Holland, so referring to the Netherlands as a whole as Holland is just wrong.
