Journalist Jonathan M. Katz is a journalist who wrote a book about the Amsterdam true story and told Los Angeles Times the movie is about "10%" accurate. He specifically points out that, while the medals Dillenbeck is seen to have earned are accurate to Butler's achievements, how he got them is far from heroic.
Amsterdam wastes its immensely talented cast and a hefty budget on an unconvincing script and meandering storytelling. A disappointment of epic proportions.

What scandal is the movie Amsterdam about?
Historical basis. The conspiracy underlying the plot of the film is loosely based on the Business Plot, an alleged conspiracy to oust President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933.
Robbie was reportedly paid $5 million for her role as the nurse, Valerie, in Amsterdam, while Christian Bale received $10 million for his part as Dr. Burt Berendsen. Bale is arguably the bigger star, but not by a considerable margin.
The title of “Amsterdam,” the typically busy and discombulating new movie written and directed by David O. Russell, refers to the events of a memorable Dutch idyll in 1918, toward the end of the First World War.
