Starting college, however, goes beyond skills acquisition and further involves finding a community—a place where you connect with others, feel faculty and staff nurturing your progress, and have access to opportunities that inspire, elevate, and align with your expectations. Not every first-year experience works out the way you planned. Maybe you started at another four-year institution and decided it wasn’t a good fit, or you made the decision to begin your journey at a community or junior college to test the waters and complete your general education requirements before making a firm commitment.

Wherever you’re coming from and whatever your goals, the University of Mississippi is here to guide you through the transfer process, help you feel welcome on campus, and acclimate you to a new environment, whether in Oxford or one of our regional locations.

Transferring to the University of Mississippi

We look for strong, dedicated individuals who have received an associate degree at a community or junior college or who have earned at least 30 credits toward a bachelor’s degree from a regional college or university.

Transferring to Ole Miss will be one of the most important decisions of your life. We seek to make it as smooth as possible and shepherd you to success on campus:

• If you’re arriving from a community or junior college, your coursework directly aligns with our bachelor’s requirements. You stay right on track to finishing your degree on time without having to retake key courses.
• Connect and network in the classroom. Junior- and senior-year classes at Ole Miss have 20 to 30 students on average. Don’t feel like a number or like you’re lost in a large lecture hall. Get to know your fellow classmates, while smaller groups let instructors provide individualized attention and direct you to enriching, career-building opportunities outside of the classroom.
• Discover a community where you can thrive. At our Oxford campus and in the surrounding community, there’s something for everyone—large sports games where everyone comes together, Greek life ready to welcome you, a strong local music scene, and literary history that begs to be explored. As you begin, our Transfer Leadership Organization offers programming and services to help you fully transition into life on campus. Transfer students also have the option to live in on-campus housing, as space permits.
• Financial aid awards acknowledge your achievements and illustrate our commitment to a quality, affordable education. Transfer students are eligible for grants and loans. Additionally, Ole Miss offers scholarships to individuals transferring from a community or junior college.
• Straightforward transfer credit evaluation applies your hard work toward your degree and overall GPA and further considers military service, CLEP exams, and AP and IB courses.

Transfer Student Requirements

Admissions

Students may be accepted for transfer from other regionally accredited colleges and universities if they have earned an associate degree intended for transfer to a four-year school with a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. In addition, students may be accepted from other regionally accredited colleges and universities if a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA has been maintained on all coursework attempted, with the exception of vocational/technical or other courses not acceptable for transfer.

Every attempt on repeated courses is counted. Applicants must list all colleges attended on the application for admission. Failure to provide information about prior college attendance is grounds for disciplinary action, including immediate dismissal from the university.

In addition, the applicant must meet one of the following criteria:

• New Transfer with 30 or more transferrable hours:
  • College GPA – 2.0 cumulative GPA on all credit hours*
• New Transfer with less than 30 transferrable hours:
  • • College GPA – 2.0 cumulative GPA on all credit hours*
    • Meets Mississippi resident freshman admission requirements and has at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA for all college-level transferable coursework. Review all resident requirements for incoming freshman students.

  *Cumulative GPA as computed by UM and includes all transferrable college coursework.

Recommended 30 transferable semester credit hours:

• 6 hours of English Composition;
• 3 hours of college algebra or quantitative reasoning (taken from a department of mathematics) or a more advanced mathematics course;
• 6 hours of laboratory science;
• 6 hours of social or behavioral science; and
• 9 hours of fine arts and humanities.

Academic Requirements

Transfer students are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 on courses taken at the university in order to graduate. See Degree Requirements in the Academic Regulations chapter of the Undergraduate Catalog for more information.

Transferring Credits

Credit Evaluation

Once you enroll at Ole Miss, all previously completed coursework will be evaluated. All accepted credits will go toward your permanent academic record. In addition to showing completion of general requirement and degree coursework, accepted credits will be factored into your cumulative GPA.

As you go through the credit evaluation process:

1. Outside of fulfilling general education requirements, individual schools or colleges at Ole Miss will determine which credits will be applied toward your degree program.
2. Credits by examination can count toward no more than half of the hours required for your degree program. Ole Miss evaluates Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), CLEP, Cambridge Assessment International Education program, advanced standing examination, and placement examination scores, in addition to educational experiences in the Armed Forces.
3. If you’re attempting to transfer credits from an institution located outside of the US, you’ll need to submit official transcripts to Ole Miss and World Education Services (WES) for evaluation. Transcripts not in English will need to be translated ahead of time. Expect evaluations to take seven to 10 days.

Transfer Equivalencies

The University of Mississippi has transfer agreements with in-state and out-of-state community colleges and four-year institutions. These relationships allow for clear course-to-course equivalencies and reduce the instance a transfer student has to take a redundant subject or retake a particular course. Financial Aid

The University of Mississippi has many financial aid programs to help exceptional and deserving students, and 76 percent of Ole Miss undergraduates receive some form of financial aid. These forms of financial aid can include academic and need-based scholarships, grants, student loans, and work-study programs.

The Office of Financial Aid is located on the second floor of the Martindale-Cole Student Services Center, and representatives are always available and happy to help you through the process of finding and receiving financial aid to help pay for your costs of attendance. You will find advisors and graduate assistants on duty Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the express advising station in our lobby when you have questions or need assistance, and there is no appointment required if you wish to sit down with an advisor for an office visit during those hours.

• The Office of Financial Aid is happy to assist you with finding financial aid to help pay for your costs of attendance.
• To begin, you should submit a University of Mississippi Admission application and a transfer transcript.
• Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for any need-based awards and/or student and parent loans. Be sure to specify our school code (002440) on the FAFSA. You may contact the FAFSA processor at 1-800-433-3243 if you have any questions.
• Mississippi residents should apply for state grants (including MTAG). If you are transferring mid-year from another Mississippi school, be sure to let the State Office of Financial Aid know that you are changing institutions, so they will direct your funds appropriately.
• You may also be eligible for scholarships. We are proud to award students who have achieved academic excellence and those with particular talents and demonstrated leadership skills. You must be admitted to the University of Mississippi to be considered for scholarships. Please note that scholarship eligibility criteria and amounts may change without prior notice.

Prospective transfer students should remember the following:

• Financial aid does not “transfer” from one institution to another. Each institution must evaluate students’ eligibility independently of other institutions.
• Check with your current Financial Aid Office to make sure you have completed all requirements for a departing student.
• Read carefully any correspondence you receive from the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of Admissions, or other departments on campus.
• Feel free to contact a financial aid advisor with any questions you have about financial aid at Ole Miss.
• Attend Transfer Student Orientation once admitted to Ole Miss.

Student Housing

Students who transfer in 30 or more credits (achieving sophom*ore classification or higher) or meet one of the following exemptions listed here, are not required to live on campus. Transfer Admissions Guarantee (TAG)

If you have been accepted to the University of Mississippi as a high school senior, but choose to attend a community or junior college first, then you can “TAG” yourself. The University of Mississippi will guarantee your admission for up to two years, provided you meet the following criteria:

• attend only regionally accredited community/junior colleges;
• maintain at least a 2.0 GPA on all transferable work, as calculated by the University of Mississippi; and
• transfer to Ole Miss within two years.

When you are ready to enroll at the University of Mississippi, simply log back into your application and complete the following:

1. Select the term you plan to enroll.
2. Select the campus you plan to attend.
3. Submit a new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
4. Submit the Community College Transfer Scholarship Application.

In order to “TAG” yourself as a high school senior and maintain your acceptance for up to two years, simply select “Guest Access” on the myOleMiss portal. Then, you will click the “Admissions” tab on the home page and select “Admissions Confirmation.” Enter your application number and date of birth, and you will then be provided with the option to select the “TAG” program.

Important Info & Dates

• July 1, 2023 – Admissions application opens for Fall 2024 (Please note that during peak application times, it takes between 3-4 weeks to process an application, once all materials have been received.)
• March 1, 2024 – Transfer Scholarship Application Deadline (Oxford campus)
• Join the Transfer Leadership Organization. TLO is a student organization and programming board that works to provide transfer students the opportunity to fully transition into the University of Mississippi student body. For more information, check us out on The Forum or follow us on Instagram!
• Don’t forget about orientation! Orientation sessions for transfer students prepare you for enrollment. Attend to receive academic advising and register for classes. Review all dates and register for your session.

Transfer Admission Planner

As you prepare to transfer to Ole Miss, be sure to:

• Submit an online application by visiting edu/applynow and clicking Undergraduate Admission.
• Submit official transcripts from all colleges previously attended for evaluation. If you are to be admitted under freshman admissions criteria, please submit an official high school transcript in addition to official transcripts from all colleges previously attended.
• If you are to be admitted under freshman admissions criteria, have official ACT/SAT scores sent electronically by the testing agency.
• All applicants should submit required materials well in advance of the term for which they intend to enroll.
