Horses to watch: Nokoma is the horse most mentioned as having the potential to score a Florida Derby upset. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer beat Officer with Yougottawanna when Officer was considered a leading 2-year-old and now will try to bump off Siphonic with USS Tinosa, the Sham Stakes winner who would be the best 3-year-old born in Ohio if not for Harlan's Holiday. Mayakovsky, who has raced only twice but not since finishing second in the Sept. 1 Hopeful Stakes, could join the fray with a Gotham win. Plots: Siphonic makes his first start since the Jan.
19 Santa Catalina, when he stumbled badly at the start, spotted the field 10 lengths and closed to be second (albeit by 5 lengths) to the sidelined Labamta Babe. Bobby Frankel, who trains Labamta Babe, will have his first start with Medaglia D'oro, whom he bought for owner Edmund Gann following an Oaklawn maiden victory. The colt had been trained by Kentucky-based David Vance. Pace will be critical in the Florida Derby. Will Smooth Jazz go out with Booklet, who led all the way in the Holy Bull and Fountain of Youth? If so, it will help every horse but Booklet.
The extra sixteenth-mile also should be telling. Saarland showed in his Remsen win that he is better around two turns, and the Gotham is a one-turn mile. Also, Mayakovsky, a slight favorite over Saarland, appears to be the lone speed. Louisville owner-trainer Danny Hurt hopes he has a Derby contender in 3-for-3 Bunk Ted, who easily won the Tampa Bay Derby prep. Rivals in the field of 10 include Hutcheson winner Showmeitall and Political Attack, fourth in the Fountain of Youth for Kentucky trainer John Hennig and former Kentucky governor Brereton Jones.
History: The Florida Derby has produced 19 Kentucky Derby winners, 10 who swept both races, including Monarchos last year, the San Felipe has produced 10 Kentucky Derby winners, including Silver Charm in 1997, Real Quiet in '98 and Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000. The Gotham has produced only one Derby winner, but it was Secretariat in 1973. The Tampa Bay Derby, which got its graded status back this year, has been blanked. However, it did send out 1999 runner-up Menifee. Catching up: Japanese-bred Sunday Break, one of the recent "hot" horses on the Derby scene, was held out of the San Felipe, with trainer Neil Drysdale saying the colt needed more time out with knee problems Trainer Tony Dutrow switched from the Gotham to next Saturday's $500,000 Lane's End Spiral Stakes for Maryland-based Saratoga Blues and said the 3-for-3 colt will be pointed toward the Preakness rather than the Derby Brian Peck has been replaced by Pat Day aboard Battaglia Memorial winner Request for Parole for Turfway Park's Spiral Stakes.
And Tony D'Amico already having lost the mounts on Repent and Harlan's Holiday has been replaced by Eddie Delahoussaye on Battaglia runner-up Perfect Drift Ethan Man, trained by Churchill-based Pat Byrne, heads a field of five in today's seven-furlong Swale Stakes at Gulfstream, but none of the horses are expected to be serious Derby campaigners. McGaughey has colt on two-prep schedule for Kentucky Derby By JENNIE REES The Courier-Journal Saarland will be the last of America's top Kentucky Derby candidates to make his 2002 debut when he goes to the post in tomorrow's $200,000, Grade III Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct.
The scheduling leaves Saarland with a two-prep campaign including the April 13 Wood Memorial before the May 4 Derby. Since 1906, only five horses have won the Derby off two prior races as a 3-year-old, and only Sunny's Halo in 1983 did it in the past half-century. Irish-based Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Johannesburg is the only other horse among the 23 listed in Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby Future Wager who hasn't raced this year. But trainer Shug McGaughey isn't worried that Saarland won't have enough prep races to be at his best for the Derby. After Saarland won the Nov.
24 Remsen Stakes, McGaughey backed off the rangy youngster to let him mature. He had hoped to get Saarland in a seven-furlong allowance race, but three times the hoped-for race failed to attract enough entries. "He's being trained for the Derby, but I'm not going to kill him to get there," McGaughey said. He noted that Saarland raced five times last year and already has gone l's miles in the Remsen, his last start. "It might be different if I didn't think he naturally wanted to run that far, like in the Derby," McGaughey said.
"But I think he's one of those horses that when the other horses are getting done, he's just getting going." Few horses in the Derby hunt scream VA miles in pedigree as much as Saarland, who is a son of 1990 Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic winner Unbridled and 1991 Alabama winner Versailles Treaty. It is not that unusual for Derby winners to start their 3-year-old seasons in March. Spend a Buck, the 1985 winner, didn't run until March 23. However, he along with March starters Alysheba in '87 and Sunday Silence in '89 all had three preps. Easy Goer, McGaughey's last Derby starter, began his year on this same weekend in the Swale Stakes but also had three starts, including the Gotham and Wood and was second in the Derby to Sunday Silence.
The training of Derby horses, however, has changed dramatically the past few years. Victory Gallop nearly won the 1998 Derby over Real Quiet off two preps. "I feel very good about where I'm at right now," McGaughey said. "I'm not going over there Sunday with these huge expectations of winning; a one-turn mile is not his gig.
