Hi everyone,

I would have never thought that I would pick up a non-detective My Little Pony comic but I love reading about The Odyssey I love reading about Greek myths and having a My Little Pony version of the Odyssey was interesting. I will tell you that I was worried that since the main character of this comic was Pinkie Pie I was worried that it would go off the rails (not that it’s a bad thing) Pinkie was a prefect fit to play the lead for this story.

Story time

Our story begins on Sugar Cube Island where chefs from around Greece has come to get their hoofs/claws on The World’s Most Prefect-est Cupcake. (I kid you not that is the treasure’s name, I love cupcakes, and it makes sense for Pinkie that would be the important thing she leaves behind).

Pinkie left the island to participate in the Great Trojan Baking Competition and has been gone for 10 years and everyone thinks she is not coming back so the cupcake is up for grabs. So, the chefs are now putting pressure on Mrs. Cake to pick a chef that gets the cupcake, which Mrs. Cake tries and stalls.

Now Pinkie is on her ship in the middle of the ocean, she befriends a bird, and she names him Homer. She laments to Homer that she is trying to get home to the World’s Most Prefect-est Cupcake. But Pinkie got lost on her way home. Pinkie and Homer come across an island Pinkie runs into a green pony who lives on the island who doesn’t introduce his name too.

But the green pony introduces Pinkie to lotus macaron, and tries to get her to eat it but Pinkie evades but the green pony starts telling the story of Atalanta.

Ok this is what I really like about comic, not only its retelling of a famous Greek story, but the famous ponies play roles of famous Greek heroes.

So, Atalanta is played by Rainbow Dash, the fast racer around. Atalanta’s dad is worried that she doesn’t have any friends (this is much like the episode where Rainbow gets Tank her pet) he gets the idea the only one who could Atalanta is the one who can be her friend, so he sets up a race. Which Atalanta wins every time until she goes up against Hippomenes (who is Spitfire).

However, Hippomenes before the contest meets with Aphrodite (who Applejack plays). Aphrodite gives Hippomenes an golden apple, which during the race Hippomenes throws to distract Atalanta and Hippomenes wins the race.

Pinkie makes the connection after talking to the green pony that the macrons are making them forgetful, she throws her away which makes the ponies of the island unhappy and chase her off the island.

So, after drifting for a while at sea she comes across another island. This island has a lot of pigs on it. Who do we meet on the island, Circe (who Zacora is playing). Pinkie starts boasting about her cupcake to which Circe asks how she knows it’s the best cupcake.

Now Circe starts telling the story of Arachne.

Arachne (who is played by Rarity) is the best seamstress around no one could compare and that made her a bit arrogant. One day a traveler had asked Arachne if she is the famous weaver that everyone talks about.

Which Arachne agrees and starts boasting she is even better than Athena (who Twilight is playing), which to no surprise the traveler was Athena in disguise. So, Athena challenges Arachne to a weaving contest to see who the better weaver is. Athena admits that Arachne is the better weaver, but instead of being modest Arachne starts boasting which results Athena turning Arachne into a spider.

After some more talking Pinkie (with the help of the pigs) discovers what Circe was doing and makes a run for it.

Somehow Pinkie gets to the underworld, and she meets Hades (who Discord is playing) and he gives Pinkie a map back home, which Pinkie is having a hard time picking the right route. This is where she meets the Queen of the Underworld Persephone (who yes is played by Fluttershy).

Persephone helps Pinkie with a story, the story of Helios and Phaethon (who is played by Celestia and Luna) and it doesn’t follow like in the main series, that Helios loved for her hard work pulling the sun across the sky. While Phaethon grows jealous and wants to do it too. Helios tells her it’s not as easy as it looks, but Phaethon doesn’t believe her.

So, on the day of Phaethon birthday she is granted one wish by Helios, which is her chance to pull the sun across the sky and get the love that she saw Helios receive.

Helios agrees and tells her she has to pull the sun just right or the world won’t get the sun they need. Unfortunately, Phaethon can’t control the sun, so some areas got too much sun and other didn’t get enough, and she crashes. With some heart-to-heart Phaethon got her own thing to pull across the sky: the moon.

After some comedic back and forth with Persephone and a chase scene Pinkie makes it home to Sugar Cube Island only to find out that Mrs. Cake had to break under pressure and is holding the contest for the cupcake. Which breaks Pinkie sprinkle cover heart.

Maud Pie makes an appearance and tells Pinkie the story of Eros and Psyche (Big Mac is playing Eros while Sugar Belle is playing Psyche). Psyche is married to monster, but he is really kind to her, his one rule is that she is never look at his face, well one not when Eros was sleeping Psyche looked and he had to leave. So, Psyche went on a quest and even asked Aphrodite for help. Aphrodite sets her task that she has to complete (which looks like farm chores for Sweet Apple Acres). In the end Eros and Psyche got back together and lived happily ever after.

Which gives Pinkie the idea that she will compete to save her beloved cupcake. So, she disguises herself as a pony named Fiery. Long story short, she wins the contest only for Homer to steal the cupcake.

I love this comic. The number of jokes are too funny, I found a Monty Python and the Holy Grail joke, the Fiery reference which was a play on Guy Feir and Pinkie mentions that she got a hoof shake from Palomino Fillywood (love the Paul Hollywood ref.) and even the Great Trojan Baking Competition is a pun too.

This is one of the most interesting comics I have picked up, and I found out that there is going to be another issue The Unicorn of Odd, natural this is the Wizard of Oz. Applejack is playing Dorthy and Winoea is playing Toto, Pinkie is playing Scarecrow, Rarity is the Tin Man, and Fluttershy is the Cowardly Lion.

This series has got a fan, and I can’t wait to collect them, I hope they do a Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot or even Sam Spade.
