My latest: Interswitch, the African payments behemoth backed by Visa, grew its revenue 23% in its fiscal year ended March 2023 to ₦66.6B ($42M), up from ₦54 billion in 2022.The IPO candidate reported profit of ₦5.6B ($3.5 million) as it consolidates its mobile money business and signals renewed plans to expand to the US. The company has acquired the remaining stake in Interswitch East Africa for an undisclosed amount. The company has also combined its Nigerian agency banking and mobile money businesses, IFIS/Quickteller and M-Kudi, into a single entity. The consolidation will help Interswitch make a bigger push into consumer payments and it has already applied for a "payments service bank" (PSB) license from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).Interswitch is also planning further expansion beyond fintech. The company informed shareholders that it has received a mobile network virtual operator (MNVO) license in Nigeria, Africa’s biggest telecoms market. The fintech company said it is "investigating the launch of a capex light virtual telecoms model using the license, combining payments and telecoms services to B2B customers and consumers."

Interswitch revenue in dollar terms is a victim of Nigeria's dramatic exchange rate collapse since last year.At the March 2023 exchange rate (₦459 = $1) when this annual report ended, Interswitch's ₦66.6B revenue was equal to $145M. At today's rate, it's just $42M. 😕A lot of people might translate the $42M revenue as a sign that Interswitch is overvalued. With a $1B valuation in 2019, that revenue multiple was roughly 24x its valuation. But at $145M, it actually did 7x its market cap — which suggests it wasn't really overvalued by March 2023.It's not odd.At a 2019 townhall with entrepreneurs, Interswitch's CEO Mitchell Elegbe talked about how Nigerian realities influenced how his company was valued. He mentioned the political risks, macroeconomic factors, etc, that bankers used to discount its growth and valuation.A rapidly devalued currency has dragged down several businesses.
